Facial filler injections – also known as dermal filler injections – are minimally invasive procedures used to plump areas of the face that can become sunken or wrinkled with age. Fillers are injected beneath the skin’s surface to soften features, plump thin lips and eliminate wrinkles – providing a more youthful appearance.
There are several different types of facial fillers, most of which are designed to treat specific problems or areas of the face. Examples include:
Hyaluronic acid – helps restore skin structure and elasticity
Collagen – fills scars and adds volume to combat effects of aging
Botulinum toxin – used to smooth wrinkles, furrows and crow’s feet
Polyalkylimide – used to add volume to the nasolabial folds
Calcium hydroxylapatite – used to fill the nasolabial folds and frown lines
Polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) – augments thin lips and fills nasolabial folds
Polylactic acid – stimulates the natural production of collagen
Facial fillers are much less invasive and more affordable alternatives to surgical face lifts, as they can quickly be administered in a doctor’s office without the use of anesthesia. There little or no recovery associated with these fillers and most results last several months before needing to be replenished.
